Step 1 – Science
Living Things
1.How light affects the growth of plants
Ms Gill’s second class conducted an experiment on the effect of light on plant growth. They planted 2 sets of cress seeds. One set had access to light and the other set did not. It was interesting to see how the seeds with no light did not flourish as well as the other set. The children designed a Fair Test by making sure that each set had the same conditions regarding water and air.

2.Making a Tornado in a bottle
Ms Gaughan’s 1st class enjoyed making a tornado in a bottle. A plastic bottle was filled 3/4 full with water. A few drops of food colouring were added. A teaspoon of glitter was also added to represent dust in the tornado. An empty bottle was taped to the top of the bottle of water. The bottles were then turned around. As the water flowed from the top bottle to the bottom, air bubbles flowed though the top bottle making a noise. The bottles were swirled in circular motion for a few seconds. There was a mini tornado in the top bottle.
