Explore a March Saying with Puppet Magic!

27th Mar 2026
There was plenty of creativity and curiosity in the classroom as we explored the old weather saying about the month of March: "In like a lion, out like a lamb." Our pupils brought this traditional proverb to life by crafting their very own puppets representing both the fierce lion and the gentle lamb.

At first glance, it looked like a delightful puppet-making session. But beneath the glue, wool, and eager hands, our young learners were developing a rich understanding of language, seasons, and the world around them. Discussing the meaning of the saying encouraged comprehension skills and introduced the concept of figurative language in a fun, accessible way. We explored the weather patterns of March, observing how the month can begin with wild, stormy days before softening into milder spring sunshine.

The puppet-making itself was a wonderful workout for fine motor skills as our pupils carefully cut, glued, and assembled their characters. Choosing materials to represent the lion's fierce mane and the lamb's soft wool encouraged creativity, decision-making, and sensory exploration.

When our puppets were complete, we put on our very own puppet shows, acting out the transition from roaring lion to gentle lamb. This gave our pupils a wonderful opportunity to practise storytelling, sequencing, and using expressive language.

We were so proud of the creativity and concentration our Rangers 2 puppeteers showed throughout this project. Their lion and lamb creations now have pride of place in our classroom, a beautiful reminder that March truly has a story to tell!
