Science Experiment 🧪 🫧

14th Nov 2025

In science we made our own lava lamps and it was lots of fun!

First, we poured vegetable oil into a glass container. Then we added some water and a few drops of food colouring. We noticed that the oil and water did not mix. The food colouring mixed with the water and sank to the bottom.

Next, we dropped in an alkaline seltzer tablet. Straight away we saw bubbles forming and moving up through the oil. The coloured water went up and down like a real lava lamp. It looked like blobs floating and popping!

We learned that oil and water do not mix and that the tablet makes gas bubbles which push the coloured water up through the oil. When the bubbles popped, the colour sank back down again.

We really enjoyed this experiment and loved watching the colours move around in our lava lamps.
