Science Fun!

15th Mar 2023

This week we made our own butter in 5th class. We read about the experiment on the Science Foundation Ireland website and gathered our equipment. We needed double cream and a clean jar, a dish and some tissue. We also had a knife and crackers so we could taste our butter! Once we poured the cream into the jar we just needed to give it a good shake! This took about 20 minutes. Shaking the cream makes the fat droplets stick together and form butter. The liquid which is leftover is called buttermilk. Once we had finished eating our crackers we wrote out the instructions for making butter on our worksheets.

On Tuesday, a group of scientists from our class went and shared their knowledge with Mr Gilsenan's 3rd and 4th Class. They showed the children how to make the butter, explained the science behind it, let them help with the shaking, buttered crackers for them and let them have a taste!
