Traveller , Gypsy, Roma Awareness Week

12th Mar 2023

Traveller, Gypsy and Roma awareness week took place in our school from the 6th to the 10th of March. This week helped us to begin to understand the traditional ways of life for Gypsies. Roma and Travellers.

We were encouraged to join together and celebrate the diversity and richness that Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities bring to Ireland.

We read through a powerpoint that celebrated the huge contributions that Gypsies, Roma and Travellers have made through dance, particularly Flamenco, music, storytelling, poetry, and art and design.

We also learned about The Romani flag- a symbol for all people who identify as Roma. The flag is blue and green with a red wheel in the centre.

We challenged some of the Myths that are associated with Travellers and enjoyed hearing about their lives “on the road”.

We were excited to learn that two members of our own class were part of the Roma and Traveller communities.

Finally, at the end of the week we got to draw and design our own gypsy wagons.
